Year 1

Year 1 is the first year of KS1 and the focus is on moving children from a majority play-based learning to a more formal approach. This does not mean an end to play and exploration by any means! Most of our learning is still very physical and active and is shaped by the children’s interests. We start off introducing more formal aspects of learning through small group work and by the end of the Autumn Term we are usually ready for more whole class teaching and learning.

We cover a range of Maths and English topics and in History, Geography and Science we develop a range of key skills whilst exploring a wide variety of big questions like: Who am I? How do they do that (flight)? Where will I find..? and How does my garden grow?. We go a range of trips linked to our topics including walking around the parish, the zoo and the recycling centre (just to name a few!)

We also focus on the school’s key learning behaviours and the children continue to develop the skills to be ready to learn in different environments, respectful to everyone in our community, and safe, at all times.
