Year 6
Year 6 is an important and exciting year. It is such a pleasure to see the fruition of students’ primary learning journey when they leave us as motivated learners who fully embody our school values: nurture, inspire, achieve.
Throughout Year 6, there is a strong emphasis on developing the learning dispositions and social skills that will enable our students to thrive at secondary school. Students are encouraged to lead their learning, stepping out of their comfort zone to aim high. The classroom community is fundamental to success. It is an environment in which students inspire and support each other, valuing each other’s differences and celebrating each other’s strengths.
Our year starts with the topic – “Our World, Our Rights” in which we develop a broader perspective of the UNCRC and global issues which impact on children’s rights. We continue our global perspective throughout the year, undertaking collaborative and independent projects on topics such as the Earth’s biomes and issues that affect our planet such as climate change and pollution. In History, we study WW1 and WW2, with a focus on the Occupation. A highlight of this is an evacuation walk to the War Tunnels.
Throughout all our learning, we want students to develop as thinkers – whether that be planning scientific enquiries or working logically and systematically in maths. Creativity and individualism are also nurtured. This is not only evident in their approaches to creative subjects such as art and music but also in the choices that they are given in presenting their learning across the curriculum.
We end Year 6 with an awesome activity week and a fantastic leaver’s assembly – both of which always demonstrate what amazing young people they have become and how ready they are to take the next step on their learning journey.
