Multilingual Learners

At St Mary’s we very much celebrate cultural diversity and as a school we will be developing ways in which we can support learning for our multilingual learners, further build an inclusive community and learn about other cultures.

St Mary’s Statement of Aims and Aspirations for MLL pupils.

  • To welcome and celebrate the different languages spoken in school with displays reflecting those languages and by teaching words and phrases in different languages.
  • To establish a community of respect in which multilinguism is valued and prized.
  • To raise awareness of different cultures and languages and improve cultural access across the school.
  • To provide a range of resources to support development in home languages and in English.
  • To implement a clear approach towards developing the proficiency in English for our MLL children across the school.

We now have a section in the school library which includes a selection of high-quality books in home and dual languages.  We will also be offering opportunities for language speaking groups to meet in school to talk, share experiences and be our school ambassadors.
